Effective instrument decontamination is essential to reduce the risk of cross infection between patients and members of the clinical team.
Implementing a dirty-to-clean decontamination process will help ensure the very best level of decontamination and ongoing compliance.

Follow our intuitive decontamination process
for the safety of your patients and staff
1. Post Procedure
Prevent contaminants drying and becoming difficult to remove on re-usable instruments, whilst within the surgery room.
2. Preparation
Now the re-usable instruments have been transferred to the dirty zone in the decontamination area, what next?
3. Cleaning & Disinfection
Critical step: if the instruments are not clean, sterility cannot be achieved.
4. Sterilisation
Using the correct autoclave cycle guarantees the instruments are safe for use.
Post Procedure
Are the instruments used re-usable?
Use Eschmann recommended wipes to remove cements or bonding agents.
Place instruments in HFiT cassettes or trays.
Use an enzymatic foam spray or holding solution to prevent biofilm hardening on surfaces of instruments, if instruments are not being cleaned & disinfected immediately.
Transport in suitable container to decontamination area.
Dispose of instruments according to local guidance.

Cleaning & Disinfection
For this next step, it is important that staff have received the appropriate training and are familiar with the instructions for use of the equipment being used.
Are the instruments being processed in a washer disinfector or ultrasonic cleaner?
Refer to your log book to ensure daily and weekly tests, with validated test devices, have been performed.

Rinse instruments of all chemical solutions using RO or freshly distilled water.

3.3 Inspect the instruments using a suitable illuminated magnifier. Check instruments to ensure they are clean, functional and in good condition.
Do the instrument pass or fail the visual inspection?
Move to step 4: Sterilisation Process.
If the instrument is still dirty, reprocess the instruments. When using a Washer Disinfector, ensure other instruments are not preventing the spray of water reaching them. If the soiling is extremely attached use Eschmann recommended wipes and re-process again. If the instrument is faulty, dispose of instruments according to local guidance.

Sterilisation
For this next step, it is important that staff have received the appropriate training and are familiar with the instructions for use of the equipment being used.
Always refer to instrument manufacturer’s recommended sterilisation process. Note: For dental handpieces please refer to the guidance within HTM01-05 or SDCEP.
Are the instruments either hollow instruments, wrapped/pouched, porous or implant kits?
You should sterilise using a B type Vacuum Autoclave.
Refer to your log book to ensure daily and weekly tests, with validated test devices, have been performed.
Process instruments in your validated B type vacuum cycle, and where drying is needed for pouched or porous items, ensure you use the appropriate B type cycle with drying.
You can sterilise using a Non-vacuum 'N' type Cycle on your Autoclave, if all of your instruments are of solid construction without any hollows.
Refer to your log book to ensure daily and weekly tests, with validated test devices, have been performed.
Process instruments in your validated non-vacuum 'N' type cycle on your autoclave.
Is the pouch damaged or wet?
The instruments are not suitable for storage and must be reprocessed. If the pouch is damaged, the instruments will also need to be re-pouched.
